A striking original portrait by noted Texas artist Olin Herman Travis (1888–1975), dated December 1969.

Painted late in Travis’s career, the work depicts a young woman identified on the reverse as “Miss McCauley.” Her direct gaze, center-parted hair and wonderfully late-1960s styling give the portrait an unmistakable sense of its era, while Travis’s loose, expressive brushwork keeps it feeling remarkably modern.

The painting is signed “OLIN TRAVIS” along the lower edge.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Olin Herman Travis (1888–1975) was an influential Texas painter, educator and important figure in the development of the Dallas art community. He co-founded the Dallas Art Institute in 1926 and taught a generation of artists who would help shape Texas Regionalism and twentieth-century Texas art.

Travis worked across portraiture, landscape, and figurative painting throughout his long career, and his work is actively collected today, particularly among collectors of early and mid-century Texas art.

Good vintage condition with age and wear consistent with a painting more than 50 years old. There is visible wear and paint loss along portions of the perimeter, along with surface variation and age-related marks. These have been left untouched and are part of the painting’s history.
